Simone Lueck

I don’t know much about Simone Lueck, except that I think we have a lot in common. We both love older women and fleeting attempts at looking and feeling glamorous. Except, maybe I would replace women with men, and glamour with distinguished gentlemanliness…that’s a word I just made up.

I especially love her series The Once And Future Queens:

Riitta Ikonen

Performances/documentation by Finnish artist Riitta Ikonen. I can’t believe I never added a Finnish category to the list before, because I’m pretty sure I need it, with all these amazing artists. I really like the “No One Belongs Here More Than You” series, based on the Miranda July book.

Bunnylicious: Rabbit art website

Well, someone beat me to it. I found this by sheer accident (yeah, and spending hours a day looking through the internet), and was immediately overwhelmed by the amount of art featuring rabbits. Here I thought I was all alone in this deer and owl filled world.

Check out all the fur and hare (get it? like hair? ugh) at

Some work:

A couple of pieces from what seems to be a very young artist.

I’m into psychologically creepy/scary art, I think that’s been proven. But these… well… these are literally going to give me nightmares. When I was little, I accidentally watched the part of The Fly (starring Jeff Goldblum) where his ears fall off as he’s becoming a fly, and I haven’t been the same since.

Cracking Art Group

I saw some of these in Prague, and was really happy. A part of this was probably influenced by the fact that I was in Prague, but I think if I saw these in a suburb of Hartford, Connecticut (as an example), I’d be just as glad. They’re giant plastic animals! Just hanging out! In the middle of a major city! Come on. Join the fun.
Apparently, they use all recycled plastic to make these. I want one on our front lawn.

Beautiful but terrible (in the old sense of the word) photographs from British artist Sarah Jones (obviously I’m a fan).

Favorite Artists: Vik Muniz

Filed under: Favorite Artists, Genius, Hurrah funny art, Photography — norulesnoshame @ 03:53

I’m not really sure what to write about Vik Muniz, because I’ve seen him talk, and I’m pretty I’m still under the spell of his charm and wit. I can’t help loving the work. It’s just so fun and full of trickery. It’s like the art equivalent of a magic trick, and who doesn’t like magic? Am I right, gentlemen? [crickets]
For those of you unfamiliar with his art, his main way of working is to create a representation of something using surprising or unfamiliar materials. For example, he’s made images from sugar, cotton, garbage, toys, hole punched paper, chocolate, wire, thread, beans, spaghetti, etc. Then he takes a picture of it, and the picture is the final piece. My favorites are the caviar monsters and the diamond divas (click to enlarge!). I also love the cloud drawings (he hired a plane to make drawings in the sky of cartoon clouds), the earthworks, the toys… What can I say, it warms my ice cold heart.

Robin Schwartz

I can’t wait to have a baby so I can put him/her in my artwork. But after seeing Robin Schwartz’s amazing images of Amelia, her daughter, frolicking with all sorts of animals, I figure I’ll have to send my kid to space or something just to keep up.

It also helps to have a gorgeous child…so let’s keep our fingers crossed that my baby won’t have see-through skin and a parasitic twin.

Here are some beautiful shots of Amelia, from “Amelia’s World”

More of Robin Schwartz’s work can be seen at M+B in Los Angeles:

Mel Bochner

Today, Milana sent me an email that said “Mel Bochner?” and the body says, “You liked that guy.”  And that’s it.

I’m scared.

I don’t know if he’s passed away, or if he’s off to jail, or if he’s been mauled by tigers. I’m not sure why my first inclination is that something bad must have happened to him, I think that means something is wrong with me, but let’s consider this post a pre-memorial  homage to his wonderful paintings that seem to communicate all of the sad feelings that penetrate my soul.

This one’s for you, Mel:
