Favorite Artists: Agnolo Bronzino

Filed under: Art History, Favorite Artists, Genius, Painting — norulesnoshame @ 06:10

Mannerism is the top contender for my favorite art movement throughout all of time. I can only imagine being a young, white male artist during the time of Michelangelo and Leonardo. Times were so hard. Where does an artist go from the heights of all creation? Well, to the dark side, of course. While Pontormo stuck to pastel colors and cartoonish faces, and Parmigianino was just plain ridiculous, Bronzino found a happy medium painting crazy allegories and incredibly strange portraits. I would go as far as to say that his portraits are “otherworldly,” and I do not take that term lightly. It’s unfortunate that so many of the portraits are squeezed into one round gallery in the Uffizi, because each one deserves a careful examination. By the way, how awesome is that armor? Death by metal nipple.
