Favorite Artists : Larry Johnson

The best part about Larry Johnson is that while checking out his work, we had the pleasure of meeting Patrick Painter, the gallery owner. I know that really doesn’t have a whole lot to do with Larry, but it was still pretty sweet. Patrick came out of his office with some grungy sweatpants, an amazing chain and fatty gold ring, handed my buddy Cameron a catalog of work and shook all of our hands. It was totally unexpected and awesome. I would have never imagined he would be so gracious. Oh yeah, and some of my favorite Larry Johnson pieces happened to be gracing the walls at the same time. His work is always witty and a pleasure to look at and makes us Californians proud.

I can’t wait to check out his show at the Hammer Museum. Who’s with me?

Duane Hanson

It’s true that I am easily amused. It’s also true that I totally enjoy Duane Hanson sculptures, if only because they never cease to be funny and poignant. Except for the junkie. That one’s not funny. The first time I saw one of his pieces was when I was a teenager, maybe 12 or 13, at the Hartford Atheneum, and I was convinced that the woman sunbathing in the museum was insane. When she didn’t move for a while, I cracked myself up. What can I say, I’m a girl of simple pleasures. Simple, fiberglass reinforced with fiber resin pleasures.

Sarah Lucas

One of Saatchi’s Young British Artists, Sarah Lucas makes sculptures and photographs. I think it’s funny she’s called “the bad girl” of the bunch, because as far as I can tell, all she does is smoke and make mean faces at the camera.
