Favorite Artists: Philip Guston

Filed under: Art History, Favorite Artists, Painting — norulesnoshame @ 00:46

I can’t believe I forgot about Philip Guston… he was EVERYWHERE a few years ago. In college, he was mentioned during every critique. You could see his influence all over the place. There was constant museum shows and  Artforum articles. Then, slowly, he faded away from my attention. I love his later paintings, the sad, sickly pink self-portraits where he’s been reduced to nothing but a smoking eyeball or a contemplative cloak, painting and watching the clock. I think they’re tragic and awesome paintings.
