Right now there’s a show in Baltimore called “Funny Games” curated by Jamillah James. I applaud her ambition to curate a show which uses “cynicism and visual comedy to question the role of the artist in and artistic practice in and outside of an institutional context.” Let’s be honest – in the art world, even funny things aren’t that funny. I’d rather watch Maru the cat jump into a box and slide on the floor on Youtube. That would bring me more giggles than all the funny art out there put together (and trust me, I’m a connoisseur of funny art). I did like one sculpture in particular, a chunk of wood carved and painted to look like the ever-present “Art in Theory” book, featuring hundreds of pages I have paid for and will never read. More work by Leidy Churchman:
ps. That block of cheese is carved and painted stone, and the rest is painted wood.
